Awarded Prestigious Contract to Restore Historical Matagorda Island
Lighthouse
REXCO
has been award the prestigious contract to restore the old Matagorda
Island Lighthouse to its original 1800’s grandeur. Claughton
Johnson, REXCO President, said the project should be completed
by sometime in 2003.
Built
in 1852, the lighthouse stands about 103 feet tall. The light
itself was restored in 1999. The lantern deck , where the lens
is located is broken and corroded and will be replaced. Lifted
off with one of REXCO’s crane it will be set down on the
ground to be refurbished. The metal plate that serves as the lantern
deck will be replaced. All work has been approved by the Texas
Historical Commission.
U.S.
Fish and Wildlife workers found a section of the original handrail
buried in the sand near the lighthouse, so those restoring them
know what they originally looked like. Also, the original drawings
of the lighthouse were found in the national archives in Washington
D.C.
REXCO will rebuild the foundation, drilling 16 piers (20 feet
deep by 30 inches) and will pour concrete piers
outside the foundation and set concrete beams from the piers to
re-anchor it and to provide stability. A sidewalk will be built
around the
